Bass Coast Shire Council wishes to advise that the installation of new public artwork in Wonthaggi has been completed.

Installation of this exciting and new artwork was completed in March 2023. ‘Emergence’ was commissioned by Council as part of its annual public art commissioning program, guided by the Sites and Themes Plan, which designated the location to be in Wonthaggi for 2022.

An Expression of interest for the Wonthaggi Public Art was open to suitably experienced artists. The final artwork was selected by a panel made up of local community members, Councillors and members of the Arts and Culture Advisory Committee.

Installation of this exciting and new artwork is about to start onsite and is anticipated to be completed by March 2023, subject to contractor availability and favourable weather. This project was funded through Council’s Capital works program 2021/22 in the order of $40,000. This new artwork is to be located within the reserve at corner of Heron Drive and Graham St, Wonthaggi. See map and artist concept below.

‘Emergence’ is a public artwork for the Wonthaggi community. Artist, Joel Adler, is the creator of this new artwork. The work places a dynamic steel structure emerging through a mirror like surface upon a Corten plinth. The work is elegantly aligned with the desired themes of transition and place. This artwork is inspired by the transition from coal to renewable energy in Wonthaggi. Coal tunnels ascend from the depths, converging at two points, before transforming through a mirror into a loop of endless energy.
