Project Summary
Wiltrack Excavations Pty Ltd have now completed the Car Parking Formalisation on Watt Street in Wonthaggi, which is Stage 1 of the Wonthaggi Activity Centre Project.
The Wonthaggi Activity Centre Streetscape Master Plan aims to transform the town’s core through a series of strategic improvements. Stage 1 focuses on formalising car parking in Watt Street, adding 26 new spaces, and includes the rectification and resealing of the road. This phase is designed to improve accessibility and offset the car parking reduced by Stage 2, which involves greening Graham Street. Ultimately, the plan will result in an overall increase of 11 parking spaces for the activity centre.
The Master Plan, driven by Bass Coast Shire Council, is centred on creating pedestrian-friendly streets, rejuvenating Wonthaggi’s character and connecting various parts of the town. The initiative prioritises pedestrian movement over vehicular traffic, incorporates flexible and innovative design solutions, and supports future-ready smart city infrastructure. It also promotes safe biking and walking environments, ensuring accessible and well-connected community spaces through thoughtful landscaping and shared streetscapes.
The aim of this project is to offset the parking loss in Graham Street due to the Greening of Graham Street Project while ensuring the road network is safe and sustainable for the community into the future while ensuring that appropriate levels of service are maintained. This will be achieved through:
- the formalisation of 26 carparking spaces, including one accessible park, on a 45-degree angle.
- extension to kerb outstands including drainage, kerb and channel works.
- rectification works to the road and resurfacing of the existing pavement.
This project is part of Council’s adopted 24/25 Capital Works Program and is jointly funded by Regional Development Victoria and Bass Coast Shire Council in the order of $420,000.
- Some delays to traffic in the form of lane closures. These will be managed with appropriate traffic and pedestrian control measures, including speed reductions. Please plan your trip accordingly.
- The use of heavy plant and machinery including noisy and vibration works such as earthworks, saw cutting, profiling, asphalt laying and use of trucks for removal or delivery of concrete and construction materials.
- Our contractor will notify nearby residents and businesses that may be impacted by these works, in order to minimise disruptions and allow the successful completion of the work. A letter drop will be carried out by our contractor prior to the commencement of works.
- We appreciate that these works may present an inconvenience to nearby properties, and we ask for your patience during these times. Our contractor will make every effort to minimise disruptions during construction.
- The site will be a construction zone and for your own safety and that of others, there will be access restrictions, including complete closure of the parallel parking on the south side of Watt Street. As always, emergency vehicle access will be maintained at all times.
