Project Summary

Bass Coast Shire Council appointed contractors SR Excavations to carry out new raised pedestrian safety platform works on McKenzie St adjacent to Edgar Street, Wonthaggi.

Construction began on 5 July 2024 and was completed in 2 weeks. These works were carried out under Council annual supply contracts as a part of Council’s adopted 2024-25 Local Road Safety Improvement Program.

  • Improve safety, and ease of walking for pedestrians – including school children – using the McKenzie Street footpath when crossing to both Bass Coast Specialist and Wonthaggi Campus schools.
  • The raised pedestrian platform on McKenzie Stret and adjacent to Edgar St will improve pedestrian safety when crossing the road and is located near the schools. It will encourage children to be more active and to walk rather than be driven to school.

This project is being funded by Council in the order of $70,000.

  • Construction of a new raised pedestrian safety platform and modification works to the existing footpath and kerb, including drainage improvements and linemarking/signage as required.
  • Changed traffic conditions including part road closures within the work zone, where applicable. Appropriate traffic and pedestrian control measures will be implemented onsite during these works. This will be a construction zone and we appreciate that for your own safety, and that of others, access will be restricted. We encourage road and pedestrian users to seek alternate routes during this period. Please follow signage and obey traffic controller directions. Our contractor will make every effort to minimise the disruptions to motorists, schools, residents and businesses along the vicinity of these works.
  • The use of heavy plant and machinery including noisy and vibration works such as profiling, asphalt laying, concrete works and use of trucks for removal or delivery of materials.
