Project Summary

Bass Coast Shire Council appointed Bass Coast Civil & Excavations Pty Ltd under annual supply contract to carry out Black Spot Improvement Works on Nyora-St Helier Road, Woodleigh.

Works began in early August 2024 and were completed in October 2024. This project is part of Council’s adopted 24/25 Capital Works Program.

  • The Black Spot Program is part of the commitment to reduce crashes on Australian roads. Road crashes are a major cost to Australians every year. Black Spot projects target those road locations where crashes are occurring. The program reduces the risk of crashes by providing funding for improvements such as traffic signals and roundabouts at dangerous locations. Programs of this sort are very effective, saving the community many times the cost of the relatively minor road improvements that are implemented.
  • The objective of the Federal Government Black Spot Program is to reduce the number of serious and fatal road crashes, typically over a five-year period.
  • The locations for the Black Spot improvement were determined through the crash history recorded on the Nyora-St. Helier Road.

This project is part of Council’s adopted 24/25 Capital works program and is fully funded through the Federal Government Black Spot Program in the order of $350,000.

  • The works will involve pavement widening, vegetation removal, kerb works and line marking including audio tactile line marking.
  • Installation of directional chevron hazard signs to improve safety on the road bend.
  • Extension of the existing guard rail to improve safety.
  • Appropriate traffic control measures will be in place through the duration of works, including reduced speed limits and contraflow traffic arrangement.
