About the Project

The approved Wonthaggi North-East Precinct Structure Plan will double the size of Wonthaggi and expand the business and industry precinct to provide major investment and new jobs for the region.

The Wonthaggi Alternative Freight Route will reduce pressure on the town centre, easing congestion and reducing the number of heavy vehicles travelling through the town. Removing freight from Wonthaggi’s town centre will unlock its potential as an attractive and vibrant regional centre, and increase safety for pedestrians.

Central Wonthaggi, especially on Graham Street, between Billson Street and McKenzie Street currently accommodates the freight from the Bass Highway, as well as being a key part of the Activity Centre.

The Wonthaggi Access and Movement Study and Wonthaggi Streetscapes Master Plan both support the detailed study and design of an alternative freight route.

The Wonthaggi Alternative Freight Route will:
• Eliminate current and potential bottlenecks through central Wonthaggi
• Improve safety by moving freight traffic out of the town centre
• Increase productivity and reduce freight costs
• Reduce the burden on intersections in central Wonthaggi including Graham Street, White Road and Korumburra Road
