Council has now introduced Smart Parking to areas of Cowes and Wonthaggi.

Smart Parking is a proven way to better manage our free parking using technology to help drivers save time finding an available bay and provide better access to businesses. It is not paid parking.

The Project involved the installation of 730 parking bay sensors and be supported by a Smart Parking availability app to help visitors and local residents find a park faster.

The Smart Parking Project does not have an impact on the current number of parking bays and there are no changes to parking limits/restrictions. This means that the number of parking spaces, including accessible parking spaces, available in Cowes and Wonthaggi will remain the same. It's simply a better way to manage our free parking.

Updates

MARCH 2023

The electrical retailer has turned on signage on Thompsons Avenue, Cowes.

  • The smart park technology provides data insights to make parking more efficient and to help identify service improvements in Cowes and Wonthaggi.
  • This project will test the impact of real time driver guidance and to minimise parking over-stays, giving fairer access to parking bays at high demand locations.
  • Smart Parking in Cowes will focus on guiding drivers to available parking by LED signs and to pre-plan their parking with the Smart Parking availability app.
  • Smart Parking in Wonthaggi will also collect parking usage data to help improve the parking service and make parking more efficient. It will also test the benefits of using an ‘app only’ approach to improving driver guidance and help save time to find a park.
  • Council will monitor the usage of Smart Parking over time and evaluate the benefits of providing real-time parking availability to drivers and assess the impact on travel times, congestion and resident and visitor experience in this busy precinct. It is not paid parking.

Council has appointed APARC to carry out these works as a part of Council’s Capital Funding 2021/2022 program in the order of $300,000.

  • Changed traffic conditions including nightly and day road closures within the work zone. Please follow signage and obey traffic controller directions. We encourage road users to seek alternate routes during this period. Our contractor will make every effort to minimise the disruptions to motorists, residents, and businesses along this section of road.
  • The on-street parking bays in Cowes on Thompson Avenue, Chapel Street, The Esplanade and at the Cowes Transit Centre Carpark – Long term carpark will be closed during the night working hours. Please seek alternative parking arrangements.
