Project Summary
Bass Coast Shire Council will be undertaking remediation works to the existing culvert under Payne Road at West Creek, Ryanston. The existing steel culvert has reached the end of its serviceable life due to corrosion and deterioration. Rather than completely replacing the structure, Council will rehabilitate the culvert by installing a new liner within the existing culvert and upgrading the surrounding creek channel and drainage infrastructure. The project will improve the long-term safety, reliability and flood resilience of this important rural road crossing.
Key project activities include:
- Installation of a new 2000mm diameter HDPE liner pipe inside the existing culvert.
- Filling the space between the new and existing culvert with specialist grout.
- Construction of new reinforced concrete headwalls at both ends of the culvert.
- Creek channel improvements upstream and downstream of the crossing.
- Installation of rock beaching and erosion protection measures.
- Construction of flow control weirs and associated drainage works.
- Vegetation clearing, site reinstatement and fencing following construction
The Payne Road Culvert Rehabilitation Project is fully funded by Bass Coast Shire Council as part of its ongoing bridge & culvert renewal program with a total cost of $591,661.65.
During construction, residents and road users can expect:
- Reduced speed limits through the work zone.
- Single lane traffic arrangements on Payne Road during certain stages of the works.
- Construction machinery, trucks and workers operating within the project area.
- Temporary noise, dust and increased vehicle movements during working hours.
- Continued access for emergency services at all times.
- Periodic project updates provided by Council as works progress
- Council and the contractor will work to minimise disruption and complete the works as efficiently and safely as possible.
- Improves the safety and reliability of Payne Road.
- Extends the life of the existing culvert without requiring full replacement.
- Improves drainage performance and reduces the risk of future structural failure.
- Protects the surrounding waterway from erosion through upgraded channel treatments.
- Delivers a cost-effective long-term infrastructure solution for the community
