About the Project
Phillip Island has hosted the MotoGP continuously since 1997. Over the last 3 decades the race has been shown to generate in excess of $54 million per year in economic benefit for the state of Victoria, with $29.4 million in direct expenditure within the local Bass Coast region. The visitor economy drives 1 in 4 jobs on Phillip Island, with the race playing a crucial role in supporting the local tourism, hospitality, and retail sectors.
The loss of the race will have a significant detrimental effect on Phillip Island. With the 2026 race now being confirmed as the last at Phillip Island, Bass Coast Shire Council is advocating to the State Government for a range support to assist the community’s transition away from the race.
Throughout late 2025 and early 2026 Council campaigned to keep the MotoGP on Phillip Island including the creation of an online petition calling on State Government to commit to securing a long-term contract extension beyond 2026.
Bass Coast Shire Council would like to thank everyone that has supported the campaign.
A total of 4,433 signatures were received and 636 emails sent directly to Victorian Premier Jacinta Allen.
Council is now advocating strongly for the State Government to provide a targeted support package that will assist local business and community to recover after losing this iconic event.
