Project Summary

The Mercury Vapour Lamp Elimination Program is being undertaken to support Council’s commitment to environmental sustainability, public safety, and efficient asset management.

The project involves replacing approximately 152 mercury vapour lights across the shire with modern, energy-efficient LED luminaires. Mercury vapour lamps are no longer compliant with current environmental standards. They are inefficient, contain hazardous materials, and are becoming increasingly difficult to maintain. This initiative also aligns with AusNet’s MV Bulk Changeover Program, which provides rebates and reimbursements to councils transitioning away from mercury vapour lighting.

The changeover of a streetlight involves a single elevated work platform with two to three crew members. In most cases there will be minimal disruption to traffic, however crews may be required to close traffic lanes for a period of time. Residents may keep their vehicles parked on the street but are requested to avoid parking directly below streetlight poles during the works.
