Information for community
Following a recent land slip that occurred next to the Nyora-Wonthaggi Rail Trail at Kilcunda, Council is undertaking investigations to assess the extent of the damage.
Sand dune erosion has occurred in recent weeks at Kilcunda near Lionel Rose Carpark due to recent storms and high tides. The beach access stairs were washed away with the erosion event and there is currently limited access to Kilcunda Surf Beach.
Parks
Vic manage the coastal reserve and Council is the committee of management for
the rail trial corridor.
Council has engaged geotechnical engineering and survey contractors to assess the damage and assist with informing actions.
Following the investigation work we will inform the community of any recommended actions or further works.
Security fencing has been installed for public safety. The slip appears to be due to a lot of recent rainfall and a rather large high tide. The slip washed out the existing staircase down to the beach.
There is some concern that any further erosion/slips may impact the shared path.
Council has engaged Tonkin & Taylor to undertake a geotechnical assessment on the site.
We have also engaged Beveridge Williams to undertake a surface survey of the slip to assist the geotechnical assessment.
This work will help Council to assess whether the rail trail needs to be closed and identify any mitigation measures we can put in place should we keep it open.
This work is expected to take approximately two weeks.
In the meantime, we have installed security fencing to deter people climbing down the embankment where the stairs use to be.
We are also exploring opportunities to divert path users should this section need to be closed.
