The existing Cowes Recreation Reserve is at capacity and unable to support the growing demands of the community. The aging facilities are fully programmed, leading to scheduling and maintenance challenges.
Limitations in the available space at this site means it is unsuitable for the expanded recreational infrastructure required to service the growing needs of the region.
New greenfield site
The proposed Phillip Island Recreation Precinct greenfield site is located on the corner of Ventnor Road and Phillip Island Road in Cowes.
The site comprises of two separate land parcels of equal size with a total land area of 32.67 hectares.
Both parcels are owned by Bass Coast Shire Council and would provide ample space for the future outdoor recreation needs of the community and visitors to the area.
Future needs of the region
The greenfield site will meet the future sporting and recreation needs of Phillip Island and the surrounding Bass Coast Region. Facilities and spaces initially identified for the site include:
- 2 x Football and cricket ovals
- Multi-use Pavilion
- Soccer pitches
- Multipurpose and flexible sports fields
- Netball and tennis courts
- Athletics facilities and picnic facilities
- Bushland areas with walking paths
- Fenced off-leash dog park
- Playspace
- Skate Park
Staged approach
The Master Plan was completed in September 2023 will guide the development of the reserve through a staged process over the next 20 plus years that reflects community sporting and recreation needs and the likely incremental availability of capital funds.
