Project Summary
Bass Coast Shire Council’s Infrastructure Services Department has appointed a specialised regional contractor, Maffra Trenching & Boring Pty Ltd, to carry out culvert renewal works on Grantville Glen Alvie Road, Grantville.
About the Project:
Replacement of the failed concrete culvert structure in order to provide protection from erosion and ensure continued passage of traffic along Grantville Glen Alvie Road. Grantville Glen Alvie Road is a significant economic connector between the rural communities and other urban centres with the municipality and a major contributor to the Melbourne supply chain for quarry materials. A major consideration of the design and construction solution for this culvert is for it to remain trafficable thus limited options as well and allowing for Melbourne Water Waterway to remain operational. The project includes:
1. Specialist Civil Construction Activities
• Onsite Thermal fusion of HDPE pipe – Thermal Fusion is used to heat two HDPE pipe surfaces to a
specified temperature and then fusing them by applying a sufficient force. In this project this is required to
have a continues and seals pipe to allow pipe pulling and for the grout injection to enter the pipe. This
requires specialist equipment onsite.
• Slip Lining/"Skull drag" in the context of HDPE pipe pulling refers to a specialised method, also known
as a pipe pulling method, where a new pipe is dragged through the existing one. This type of work can be
done in simple/single pipe scenarios by earthmoving. However, the existing culvert has complex issues
that requires specialist contractors to overcome including misalignment, differential settlement, crushing
pipes and length of pipe requiring thermal infusion methods.
• Grout injection engineering - a specialist technique used to stabilise soil and reinforce structures by
injecting grout (typically cement or chemical) into the ground. It has been identified that this part of the
project would be subcontracted due to the high degree of specialty within Australia.
2. Non-Specialised Civil Construction Activities
• Supply and Install of Concrete Headwall.
• Earthmoving to reshape waterway.
We appreciate your patience during the construction period, please do not hesitate to reach out to us if you have any questions before or during the project.
- Preliminaries including mobilisation, site establishment & traffic control.
- Grout injection engineering , Slip Lining/"Skull drag & Onsite Thermal fusion of HDPE pipe
- Earthmoving to reshape waterway, Installation of 2 Concrete Headwalls, Ro and Rock Beaching
- Batter Stabilisation/Reshaping.
- Reinstatement of drainage, waterway area and nature strips
Removal, Disposal Cleaning and demobilisation
This project is funded by the Bass Coast Shire Council Capital Renewals Program at a cost of $338864.70.
- Throughout the project access along Grantville Glen Alvie Rd will maintained by traffic control measure single lane closures &/or worksite speed zones. The work methodology has allowed for a lot of works activities to occur from outside outside of the trafficable lanes along Grantville Glen Alvie Road. Any access or impacts on will be communicated to residents by the contractor ahead of time. All appropriate works approvals and permits have been approved from the relevant agencies.
- The use of heavy plant and machinery including noisy, and vibration works such as earthworks, saw cutting and use of trucks/crane for delivering concrete/culverts to site.
- We appreciate that these works may present an inconvenience to nearby properties, and we ask for patience during these times. Our contractor will make every effort to minimise disruptions during construction. It is advised to plan your trip accordingly. As always, emergency vehicle access to properties will be maintained.
- Appropriate traffic control measures will be in place throughout the duration of the work.
