About the Project

The Bass Coast Aquatic and Leisure Centre in Wonthaggi has been a cornerstone of community health, fitness and recreation for more than 45 years. However, the ageing facility is now limited in its ability to deliver the programs and experiences expected of a modern aquatic centre.

To ensure aquatic and leisure services continue to meet the needs of a growing community, Council has prioritised the redevelopment of the existing Wonthaggi facility as the first stage of the Bass Coast Aquatic Strategy 2015. This revised approach allows Council to maintain community access while addressing the facility’s most urgent renewal needs and improving its long-term sustainability.

The redevelopment concept plan presents a modern, flexible and inclusive facility that will continue to serve as the region’s aquatic hub, catering to competitive swimming, leisure activities, rehabilitation, and community events.

Indicative components proposed through the redevelopment concept plan include:

  • 25m pool
  • Warm water, leisure and learn-to-swim pool
  • Water play pool
  • Spa and sauna/steam room
  • Gym and multipurpose rooms
  • Foyer, café and community spaces
  • Modern change rooms and amenities

The redevelopment will be designed and delivered in stages, allowing works to proceed as funding becomes available while keeping services open wherever possible.

Council has allocated $500,000 in the 2025/26 Budget to begin detailed design work. Construction timeframes will depend on design progression and the success of future State and Federal Government funding partnerships.

While the Wonthaggi redevelopment is the immediate priority, Council remains committed to delivering a second aquatic facility for Phillip Island as part of the next stage of the Aquatic Strategy.
