Bass Coast calls on the Federal Government to set a stronger and accelerated ambitious national emissions reduction target to limit global temperatures increases to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.

Including:

  • Consistent with limiting global warming to 1.5°C, set a target of net zero emissions by 2035, with an interim target of 74% by 2030, and a roadmap for delivery;
  • Increase investment in active and public transport, introduce vehicle fuel efficiency standards and remove the luxury car tax on electric vehicles (EVs);
  • Increase financial support for low-income households to reduce emissions and energy bills by encouraging home electrification and energy efficiency measures;
  • Unlock circular economy opportunities by increasing demand for recycled content and providing incentives for industry to drive innovation. Introduce comprehensive, mandatory product stewardship schemes to create a price incentive for waste reduction;
  • Provide funding to support sustainable and regenerative agriculture programs, that encourage farm adaptation to climate change, increase diversity and productivity, and contribute to carbon drawdown.

Bass Coast calls on the State Government to;

  • Update the Victorian Planning Provisions to include the Sustainable Subdivision Framework.
  • Fast-track the implementation of Plan Melbourne’s Action 80 that seeks to review the Victorian planning and building systems to support environmentally sustainable development outcomes for new buildings to consider their energy, water and waste management performance.
  • Develop the Statement of Planning Policy to include a Carbon Positive Policy Domain.
  • Partner with Local Governments to develop Township Adaptation Plans.
